NASEM Community Lecture and Discussion: Supporting Caregivers in STEMM
A joint endeavor between the Office of Physician Scientist Education and Training (PSET) and the CTSI, Ohio State is hosting the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine for a site visit in August to discuss supporting our faculty clinician/physician scientists who balance work demands with family caregiving responsibilities and expectations.

The Ohio State University will welcome representatives from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) for a campus site visit in mid-August. The visit will include a community and networking event focused on advancing support for caregivers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM).
In partnership with the College of Medicine’s Physician Scientist Education and Training (PSET) program and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the event will showcase best practices for supporting caregivers in STEMM.
Ohio State is one of only five institutions selected for a site visit. Information exchanged at this event will advise university leadership about faculty support needs around caregiving responsibilities and will inform a NASEM national symposium in late 2025.
A featured presentation will be delivered by Ginny L. Bumgardner, MD, PhD, Associate Dean of PSET/PI, who will share outcomes from the Funds to Retain Clinical Scientists (FRCS) initiative. This program, supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF), aims to reduce attrition among physician-scientists and other faculty and staff in the STEMM community facing caregiving challenges.
This event open to all health sciences faculty, residents, fellows and trainees with a vested interest in the impact of caregiving on career development.
